What is Gianduia?

And how do I pronunce "gianduia"?

Not to be confused to bacio (based off the famous Perugina chocolate "Baci", though they are remarkably similar) gianduia is chocolate and hazelnut. In fact, if you've had Nutella, you've basically had gianduia. Nutella was first called "Pasta Gianduia" or "Gianduia paste" before being renamed.

A jar of Nutella.
Gianduia for the masses.

The biggest difference between the two, and the reason you should order the gianduia gelato instead of Nutella (if you ever are in the position of having to make such a choice), is because Nutella uses vegetables oils and cocoa powder, where gianduia is simply chocolate (cocoa butter-based chocolate) and hazelnut. Sort of like Nutella in its purest form.

While it looks like a difficult name to pronounce, what with all of the vowels smushed together, it's actually quite easy. Gianduia is pronounced "john-doo-ee-ya" which sounds like this entire article was just a meme for the punchline, but I promise it's not.

If you're here for the gelato information and you'd like to try gianduia but it's not available, you can make your own by asking for a scoop of the hazelnut and a scoop of the [dark] chocolate, two mainstay flavors at any gelateria.
