Advertisements

Also known as: What’s with the advertisements?

The Ezoic links on this page are affiliate links. If you use them to sign up and monetize your website through ad placements, Only A Bag will earn a small percentage of Ezoic’s cut.

If you’re looking for the privacy policy and what the advertisers will do with your information, that can be found here.

Only A Bag was recently accepted into Ezoic‘s network of advertisers. This means that we now display ads through their network (rather than AdSense or MediaVine) where before we didn’t display ads.

Why?

One of the biggest challenges facing any website is monetization. How to make money and still run the website, rather than funding the website through outside money (from a 9-5 job, for instance).

Like many websites, we use a few different methods to monetize our website:

  • Affiliate links: This is a link to a product or a service (like a pair of shoes, or a house sitting service) that will make us a small percentage of the seller’s cut. So it won’t cost you more, but the seller shares a small portion of the proceeds with us. The proceeds are usually around 1-5% of the final sale. As you can imagine, this isn’t very much unless it’s a major sale, or small sales to many people.
  • Advertisements: Like most websites, we have now opted to show ads. Good news for you and us, you don’t need to click on the ad for us to make money. We make money for each impression (time it was shown) and each click.
  • Products: Right now, we don’t have any products for sale apart from our book that is currently unavailable.
  • Donations: Most people will tell us “just ask for donations.” However, most people don’t want to donate, especially not when they’re getting anything in exchange except information. Besides, I’m a big believer in free information, and I’d rather show ads.
  • Paywall: Again, I prefer free information.

What you can do!

Here’s the thing: we need your help.

Are there too many ads? Ads showing up in weird places? Are the ads ruining the experience of being on the website?

I (Nathaniel) will be tweaking these over the course of the coming weeks and months, trying to show ads in places where they are less obtrusive. If you have any feedback, please send us a message, whether through the website, Instagram, or Twitter.

We honestly want you all to enjoy browsing around the website, learning about where to go, what to do, how to pack, and we don’t want it to feel like you’re not having a good time.

What if I really hate ads?

I get it, I’ve been there. I still am there.

If you don’t want to see any ads, I recommend installing an adblocker. Personally, I use uBlock Origin, but there are a number of good ones out there. They will block the ads from appearing on the website and give you an ad-free experience.

However, if you can stomach the ads, we do honestly appreciate it. It helps fund our website, and it will help us grow moving forward.
